Description

Welcome. The PG Dip in Enhanced Clinical Practice programme leader is Austin Parsons: contactable at  A.Parsons@greenwich.ac.uk.

This is an exciting new two-year part-time programme for registered healthcare practitioners. At the start of the programme a clear programme of study will be agreed by the programme leader, student (and employer if necessary). It is anticipated that students will complete a maximum of 60 credits at level 7 per academic year.  Some modules and or sessions can or will be delivered online or face to face on campus. Students will be expected to complete the programme within two years (exceptions to be discussed with the programme leader).

Students who already possess 60 applicable credits at level 7 may be able to step onto the programme at year two. Please discuss the RPL (recognition of prior learning process) with the programme leader. A maximum of 50% RPL is permitted for this programme.

Costs

Each 15 credit course costs £925 and each 30 credit course costs £1850. 

Educational Aims:

The PgDip Enhanced Clinical Practice programme aims to facilitate development of knowledge, skills, and expertise of registered healthcare professionals.

 The educational aims of this award are to:

• Consolidate a student’s enhanced / professional practice-related learning and complement it with specific knowledge and skills suitable for:

    • Developing their health / social care professional roles
    • Enabling / preparing them to complete a master’s degree in healthcare practice or advanced clinical practice 
    • Applying critical thinking / reflective skills to evaluate and lead the development or services

• Further enhance students’ knowledge and expertise of different research methods

Students wanting to complete this programme are likely to be already employed in a healthcare    setting and are seeking opportunities for career development / progression and to meet the requirements of evolving clinical practice and their own continuing professional development needs. The inclusion of 5 endorsements (or pathways) recognises specialist areas of practice i.e., General Practice Nursing, Sexual Health, Midwifery and Mental Health which facilitates career progression in that clinical speciality.

Potential career destinations would be in those enhanced / senior positions which require post graduate level studies, over and above initial registration. This PGDip is also two thirds of the MA Health Care Practice or one third of the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice, therefore enabling learners to go on to achieve  a Master’s qualification via a novel form of part-time development.

There are the 5 endorsements (or pathways) currently available for year 1 of this programme. Students need to successfully complete a total of 60 credits in year 1 and year 2.

OMED 1385 – Advanced Clinical Practice through Work Based Learning (Term 1 & 2)
NURS 1637 - Long term Conditions Management in General Practice (Term 1 & 2)

Prerequisites
  • A bachelor’s degree normally 2:2 or above or equivalent professional learning which will demonstrate the ability to study at post graduate level.
  • Registration with a health, social care, or other relevant professional body
  • Applicants who do not have English as their first language must demonstrate an IELTS score of at least 7 (University requirement for non-EU students only)
  • For direct entry into year 2 of the programme 60 credits at level 7 (or up to 30 at level 6, and the remainder at level 7) are required in addition to the above criteria

For clinical practice routes that have a practice assessment component, for example the critical care, midwifery or general practice nursing pathways, applicants must:

  • Be a registered healthcare practitioner
  • Be working at least 21 hours a week in an appropriate clinical area or, have the opportunity to work outside their usual clinical area (if necessary) to gain clinical competence – this will be discussed & agreed with the programme leader prior to making    an application for this programme, in this instance students will be responsible for sourcing this experience and ensuring that appropriate agreements from the organisation providing the experience are in place.
  • Have the support of a clinical manager and appropriately qualified assessor
Assessment

The assessment methods associated with each module are detailed in the individual course specifications and handbooks. To pass each assignment a minimum mark of 50% at level 7 must be achieved; marks of 60% or over will be granted ‘merit’ grade, marks of 70% or over will be granted ‘distinction’ grade; Assessments are designed to evaluate knowledge and, where relevant, transferable skills; regular feedback about the learners’ progress will be an integral part of their programme.

All applicants need to ensure they meet the prerequisites for study outlined above before applying. If applicants wish to RPL modules from other Higher Education Institutions, it is their responsibility to provide the relevant transcripts/certificates that determine proof of prior learning at the point of application.
