This module is for experienced physiotherapists who wish to include injection therapy as a part of their management of patients with musculoskeletal dysfunction involving the peripheral joints.  The aim of this course is to enable students to develop the appropriate knowledge, understanding and skills to perform musculoskeletal injection therapy safely and competently. The module will include lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical sessions and work-based learning in order for students to develop the knowledge and skills to be able to perform injection therapy safely and competently.

Pharmacological, ethical and medico-legal frameworks 

 
 
 
 

Advanced clinical reasoning & advanced musculoskeletal assessment procedures including palpation of soft tissues & relevant structures  

 
 
 
 

Skilled practical application of musculoskeletal injection therapy including indications, contra-indications, precautions, possible side-effects, identification and management of adverse events 

 
 

Development and enhancement of communication skills with the patient and the wider health professional team 

 
 

Documentation of injection therapy procedures including evaluation of outcome 

 

This module is equivalent to 150 hours of student effort including 5 taught days and takes place online (day 1) and at College Lane Campus, Hatfield (days 2-5).

Assessment Dates

Monday 9th June 2025 - Essay (submitted online) 

Monday 30th June 2025 - Portfolio of Injections undertaken in practice (submitted online) 

 

 

 

Prerequisites

All applicants must: 

  1. Be a current registered Physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) 
  2. Be able to evidence current appropriate indemnity insurance to practice (Chartered Society of Physiotherapy membership or other appropriate certificate of indemnity). CSP certificates can be located on the CSP Website, once you log-in at: https://www.csp.org.uk/evidence-professional-liability-insurance 
  3. Provide a signed /dated letter of evidence of appropriate Hepatitis B immunisation from applicants employing Occupational Health Department or General Practitioner (mandatory UH template provided) 
  4. Provide a signed/dated letter from a qualified practitioner who has agreed to prescribe the necessary drugs for injection therapy (mandatory UH template provided) 
  5. Provide a signed/dated letter from a suitably qualified mentor who will supervise and examine injection therapy in the workplace (mandatory UH template provided) 
  6. Provide a signed/dated letter from their employer confirming support for attendance on the module and access to relevant clinical cases to achieve the practical experience of injection with support from their mentor (mandatory UH template provided) 
  7. Provide evidence of current adult basic life support training (level 2 accepted only) 
Assessment

The assessment consists of a written assignment (submitted online) and completion of a practice portfolio which includes a minimum of ten successfully completed supervised injections (undertaken in a mentor supervised work environment, then submitted online). Learning Outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:  

Successful students will typically:

  • Critically discuss and evaluate the anatomical structures and peripheral muscuoloskeletal pathologies that may be suitable for injection therapy. 
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the pharmacology of the medicines used in musculoskeletal injection-therapy including the indications, contraindications possible side- effects and adverse reactions that may occur and discuss the management of any adverse events.   
  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and understanding of the regulation and control of medicines in relation to musculoskeletal injection therapy.   

Skills and Attributes:

Successful students will typically:  

  • Demonstrate advanced musculoskeletal assessment skills within a clinical reasoning framework in order to identify and select appropriate structures for injection therapy.  
  • Perform musculoskeletal injection procedures accurately, safely and competently.  
  • Document and critically evaluate the outcome and management of injection therapy procedures, communicating effectively and confidently with patients and others and reflect on their own performance.

Who teaches this course?

The course is normally facilitated by Gulten Dogan, Module Lead and Advanced Clinical Practitioner in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. Previous regular contributors include: Kelly Lefteri (Principal Lecturer/Pharmacist), Rishi Navsaria (Senior Lecturer/Consultant Physiotherapist) and Matthew Guilliatt (Senior Lecturer/Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner), and other experts from clinical practice and research.
