Description

Please note, this course is applied for through NHS jobs in the first instance, and applicants will need to have been successful at interview before completing the University application form via this webpage. Places on this course are funded by the NHS, as advertised on NHS jobs.

This course is designed for people that already possess a first degree. This will enable nurses to gain competence and confidence in working as a district nurse in primary care settings and enhance their development for leading and managing a team in a dynamic and innovative way that enables the members of that team to care for more acutely ill patients in primary care as well as promoting independence whenever possible.

Key themes will thread throughout the taught programme to include:

  • Promoting independence and reablement
  • The development of advanced clinical expertise and management of complexity within the district nursing role.
  • Effective delivery of care for long term conditions, including palliative and end of life care and dementia.
  • Developing the use of technology to support patients
  • Evidence based practice
  • Leadership and management of people and resources
  • Collaborative working with patients, families, carers and professionals.

This course includes the V300 which enables successful candidates to independently prescribe.

Entry requirements

  • Must have 2.1. at first degree
  • Applicant must have at least 3 years post-registration experience.
  • Prior to application, you must have been successful at interview and offered a fully funded place through NHS jobs.
  • This course is not available to self-funders
  • To study at Masters Level, you must have an honours degree.
  • Student support for studying at Masters level is to be discussed with the pathway advisor. Students who have not previously undertaken study at academic Level 7 (Masters level) are advised to consider the workshop: Preparation for Masters Level Study, which can be found on the CPPD prospectus.

Course structure

This course can be undertaken as a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) or Masters degree (180 credits), core modules for both are as follows:

  • HDN_7_003 Professional Insights - the Role of the District Nurse 
  • ACP_7_010 Advanced Clinical Assessment Skills 
  • NMP_7_040 Non-Medical Prescribing: (V300)
  • HDN_7_004 Strategic Planning and Performance Management for the District Nursing Workforce  
  • HDN_6_006 Contemporary District Nursing Practice (Supervised Practice)
  • HDN_6_007 Contemporary District Nursing Practice (Consolidated Practice)
  • TAR_7_016 Research in Health and Social Care

After sucessful completion of the above modules, students can be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in District Nursing with V300 - Non Medical Prescribing. To complete the full Masters degree, student will additionally need to successfully complete the Dissertation module:

  • TAR_7_010 - Dissertation
