Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The University of Hertfordshire offers a wide variety of Continuing Professional Development courses in nursing, midwifery, allied health, social work and medical professions.

These range from study days, standalone modules as well as undergraduate and postgraduate post-qualifying degree programmes. Our aim is to educate professionals with a view to:

  • improve outcomes for patient’s health and social care provision
  • enhance patient care
  • enable career progression
  • meet workforce transformation needs and advancing practice

What CPD options are available?

There are many options available. You could choose a module that is either part of an existing post-qualifying degree, or as a standalone module which is run separately to a degree. We also offer a large number of credit bearing and non-credit bearing short courses which will enhance your knowledge and understanding in your chosen subject.

Our courses

We offer post-qualifying degrees, standalone modules and short courses for all health professionals with an interest in nursing, midwifery, allied health, social work and medical professions.

  • Short Courses

    We offer a large number of short courses some of which also have professional / regulatory accreditation. Types of study can range from half a day to a three-day block of study

  • Bespoke courses and projects

    These are designed to be flexible and offer a variety of delivery modes to suit your needs. Get in touch with Business Enterprise for more information via be@herts.ac.uk

  • Standalone modules

    Our standalone modules give you the flexibility to study at your own pace, they carry a weight of 15 or 30 credits. You can undertake up to a maximum 45 credits on a standalone basis, and then if you decide to undertake more credits, you must apply to study on a post-qualifying degree programme.

Post-qualifying degree programmes

Our post-qualifying degree programmes are part-time and could lead to:

  • BSc (Hons) degree = 75 credits without (Hons) and 120 credits with (Hons) at Level 6 only
  • Postgraduate Certificate = 60 credits at Level 7
  • Postgraduate Diploma = 120 credits at Level 7
  • Master’s degree = 180 credits at Level 7

Funding

There are different ways in which your studies may be funded:

  • NHS Trust / Employer funded - this must be agreed with your employer in advance of submitting an application
  • HEE funded – your employer will advise you if this is applicable for the courses you are studying
  • self-funding – with this option you may be eligible to access a postgraduate loan of up to £11,570 for a full MSc to help fund your studies. · For full information on fees and funding: Postgraduate Masters Loan and Fees and Funding.

The CIEA was set up to improve standards in educational assessment.We are a professional membership organisation. Our members include teachers, examiners, school and college leaders, academics, awarding organisations and people responsible for professional development in diverse sectors including finance, health and land management. Setting and carrying out assessments requires skill, expertise and experience and through our Continuing Professional Development programmes, we support the development of assessment practitioners by:

  • Training and accrediting the most experienced assessors as Chartered Educational Assessors
  • Providing specialist, high quality training for individuals and organisations

Our Qualifications

The Chartered Educational Assessor (CEA) programme is the benchmark of assessment excellence awarded under the CIEA Royal Charter. Committing to achieving Chartered Educational Assessor status is an endorsement of your professionalism and skills in and knowledge of assessment. Additionally, Chartered Educational Assessors have a notable and positive effect on the success of their organisations.

There are three stages to achieving Chartered Educational Assessor status. These steps can be completed flexibly to suit your situation. Each stage is a qualification in itself, and you can choose to progress as far as you wish. To gain Chartered Educational Assessor status all three steps must be successfully completed in a specified timeframe. The stages can be seen below:

  • Stage one – Certificate in Educational Assessment
  • Stage two – Diploma in Educational Assessment
  • Stage three – Chartered Educational Assessor Assignment

The CIEA exists to professionalise assessment and our training is central to that purpose. Our remit covers a range of assessment areas from practical ideas which support formative assessment in the classroom, to the most up-to-date theories and current thinking.

The Professional Coaching Practice course encourages participants to take seriously the conversations that take place in the workplace. The course takes a relational approach to coaching and mentoring that emphasises the broader skills of a helping conversation rather than one specific model of coaching. A range of coaching theories and models are introduced to support and enhance these skills. The course consists of six taught units, plus additional sessions for tutorials, assignment support and coaching practice.

Statistical Services and Consultancy Unit

The Statistical Services and Consultancy Unit has over two decades experience offering short courses and CPD. It delivers existing and bespoke courses to external organisations (online and in-person) and runs an annual programme of online short courses.
