Description

It is a requirement of practitioners in a research-based profession to be informed consumers of research findings in evidence based practice. In order to facilitate this amongst graduate nurses, this module will enable the student to become confident and competent when critiquing published studies. This is a compulsory module of study for students undertaking a degree pathway. Additionally, the module may be taken on a stand-alone basis for those interested in acquiring further skills and knowledge of the research process in health care.

Understanding research and being able to critically appraise the quality of reported research studies is a fundamental skill underpinning evidence based practice.

  • 4,000 word research critique.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:  

  • Evaluate the sources and the use of evidence for effective health care in professional practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the suitability of research methodologies used to generate evidence.
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge of statistical techniques.   

Intellectual skills:

  • Critically analyse research reports and demonstrate synthesis of students’ own ideas.
  • Reflect on practice and research evidence identifying areas that could be enhanced by the implementation of research evidence and strategies that may be used to enable this to happen. 

Practical Skills:

  • IT skills – searching online databases

Transferable skills:

  • Numeracy skills through introduction of statistics.
  • Problem solving skills.
