Description

This module recognises that health professionals need in-depth knowledge and understanding of physiological principles if they are to provide safe, effective, contemporary clinical care at a high level. The module therefore uses an integrated concept-based approach to enable students to learn about core physiological principles such as maintenance of homeostasis and the “normal” human response to internal and external variables.

This module aims to develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of physiological principles, thereby providing a foundation on which subsequent learning in areas such as pathophysiology, pharmacology, and prescribing can be developed, to inform and underpin clinical practice at an advanced level.

This is a core module within the MSc/PgDip Advanced Clinical Practice (Adult) and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Adult) Apprenticeship courses offered by the School of Health and Social Care.

Applicants for this module must be able to demonstrate all of the pre-requisites below.

Please note: Students are required to undertake preparation work for a minimum of 3 weeks prior to commencing the module. This will be sent out via email to all successful applicants in advance of starting the module.

Attendance (Please note, this is subject to change for future intakes)

Entry requirements

  • Evidence of a minimum of 90 undergraduate degree level health-care related credits
  • Professional:
    • Current registration as health care professional with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Practice:
    • Minimum of 3 years’ post registration experience

Career benefits

This module facilitates achievement of a number of capabilities and competencies required for advanced clinical practice.  Successful completion of this module will therefore result in a student who can demonstrate knowledge and skills that are currently in high demand within existing and emerging markets in healthcare.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and Understanding:

  • Integrate a systematic, contemporary understanding of the biological functions of biochemical processes in the human body, including control mechanisms and inter-relationships that are essential to life, such as homeostasis and the immune response.

Intellectual skills:

  • Synthesize and apply in-depth knowledge of the structure and function of all cells in the human body to a range of physiological principles.
  • Apply complex physiological concepts to a range of body systems, differentiating normal from pathological responses.

Practical Skills:

  • Demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of physiological principles under exam conditions.

Transferable skills:

  • Take responsibility for own learning and development using formative feedback and online resources to analyse own capabilities, appraise alternative learning strategies and plan and implement actions.
