An essential part of continuing to become a safe and effective NMP is to maintain competence and undertake annual CPD and revalidation as specified by their supervisor. It is also important NMPs are kept up-to-date with any changes that affect safe prescribing such as changes to the law and medicine safety. As part of Bournemouth University and Trusts commitment to safe prescribing this half day update is designed to meet those needs.
It is suitable for anyone with a non-medical prescribing qualification.
This prescribing update will be split into 2 parts which can be seen from the programme structure below:
Part 1 0930-1030 Matt Hartwell
- Welcome and Introduction
- A brief History of Non Medical Prescribing including relevant law
- Discuss The legal and ethical position on mixing and covert administering of medications
- To consider The importance of maintain competency and ways this can be achieved
- A brief introduction to Record keeping and the law
- Discuss the RPS single competency Framework the NMC and HCP standards for prescribing
Part 2 1045-1230 Rob Harvey / Adam Hocking
- Current ‘Buzz words’ in prescribing - polypharmacy, medicines optimisation, medicines safety & deprescribing.
- To explore legal, ethical and clinical decision-making regards prescribing with regards to these ‘buzz words.’
- To understand the prescribers role, responsibilities, accountability in terms of assessment of risk vs benefit and the monitoring of prescribing decisions and patient outcomes.
- To consider the advantages and disadvantages of available tools.
